Movie Review: 2019 Revue

It’s that time of year again! Revue time! I reviewed 36 movies in 2019 and it was your normal mix of crap and masterpieces and crap disguised as masterpieces (I’m looking at you Roma!). Superhero movies had a solid year once again, with the exception of the new Spider-Man movie. Women are getting their stories told more and more and we had a great movie about the Notorious RBG, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, which started my year and a decent attempt to tell the story of Harriet Tubman towards the end of the year. Sandwiched in between was the first Marvel superhero movie with a female lead which was quite good, “Captain Marvel”.

We also had a new first for 2019! A movie review by someone other than me. EricS joined us to tell us what he thought of the movie “Deathstalker”. I think he loved it and it may be his favorite movie ever and you all should go and see it as soon as possible. My memory’s not what it used to be though.

Book Review: 2018 Revue

I need to reconsider my life choices. I read a pathetic nine books in 2018. (Correction: I read 10! 10 books! Ha ah ah! I had “The Story of a New Name uncategorized accidentally. Those responsible have been sacked.) I have basically stopped reading novels at home and this needs to change. Don’t get me wrong, I still read a ton that is not reflected in the list below, but the dearth of novels sure reflects a severe lack of escapism one needs to survive reading news and blogs all day. At least the books I did read this year were all worth it except for “The Giver” of which I do not understand its popularity. After reading the four Neapolitan novels from Elena Ferrante, I shall surely jump into the HBO series “My Brilliant Friend” to see how on earth they bring these amazing and complicated books to television.

Movie Review: 2018 Revue

Movies! They are these things that you go out to the theaters to see. Remember theaters? Turns out they still exist! And I still go to them. This year, I saw 35 movies. Not bad.

Either 2018 was an extraordinarily strong year for movies or I was in an exceptionally good mood all year long and was rating movies higher than they deserved. I gave out three 5-star ratings and fully eighteen 4-star ratings. Insanity! Looking through them, I don’t see much that I think I would change. It was, indeed, a good year for movies!

This was also the year of the cursed MoviePass experiment. What a wretched company. They changed their business model more times than Donald Trump lies. See infinity movies at infinity theaters! See each movie once at infinity theaters! See select movies once at infinity theaters! See only the two movies we say you will watch at only a few theaters that carry them! Most theaters will have exactly one showing a day where you can use MoviePass, but feel free to go to these other theaters that are infinitely out of your way to see the movies that we want you to see!

Book Review: 2017 Revue

Books. I continue to read way too few of them. 11 in 2017. Pathetic. I really felt like my book count would be higher this year.

This was the year of Persephone. Fully 9 of the books I read in 2017 were her recommendations. She did not let me down. We have similar taste in books, though she is much more of a hopeless romantic than I am, as evinced by the Laini Taylor books. Everyone should right now go read “This Side of Paradise” and “Night” and “The Alchemist”. “Lolita” too, but that’s more daunting than the others. All in all, a very good reading year despite only reading 11 books. Thanks Persephone!

Movie Review: 2017 Revue

I see movies! 36 in total for 2017. This is year five of movie reviews for me. Do I get a prize?

This was the year of the true-ish story.  From the wonderful “Hidden Figures” to the also wonderful “Detroit” to the good but overrated “Dunkirk”, just to name a few. Other than that, 2017 was kind of a mixed bag. Marvel continued to kill it and even DC finally gave us a couple non-stinkers. Then there was “The Circle” and “Alien: Covenant”. Ugh, those were bad. Let us never speak of them again.

Book Review: 2016 Revue

I read a lot.  Sadly, books are probably only about 25% of what I read.  Here’s what I read in 2016.  11 measly books.  Sheesh.  I pretty much stuck to sci-fi this year, with a little non-fiction thrown in.  There were a bunch of short story compendiums that were mostly so-so except for the wonderful “The Other Half of the Sky”.  David Foster Wallace was definitely the highlight of the year and, sadly, the first book I read this year.  I’m going to try to branch out from sci-fi in 2017, but 2017 is certainly going to need some good escapism.

Consider the Lobster by David Foster Wallace – 5/5 stars

Here’s what I saw in 2016.  I continue to be too lazy to index all my movies.  This was probably the best year of movies since I’ve been reviewing.  Marvel movies killed it and animated movies did quite well too.  Also, lots of movies beginning with “The”.

Book Review: 2015 Revue

Another year, another revue.  Books.  I don’t read enough of them.  16 this year.  Partially, this is because of the size of the books I read (Close to 3,000 pages just for Ken Follett’s trilogy).  Partly, this is because I was uncharacteristically busy and preoccupied.  I never thought I’d long for the 2 hour a day commute, but boy did I get a lot of reading done then.

Year 3 of movie reviews.  Still haven’t indexed all my reviews.  This was the year of “oh yeah, I did see that movie”.  47 movies in all.  2015 started out poorly but finished strong.  The European Union International Film Festival was a bust with the exception of “Farewell, Herr Schwartz” and “Open Up To Me”.  I think I have more 1 and 2 star reviews this year than in previous years, but I’m too lazy to count.

Book Review: 2014 Revue

And so ends year two of book reviews.  You can also check out my 2013 Revue if you are so inclined.  My book reading suffered greatly this year due to an extremely distracted mind due to personal issues and I’m sure the reviews reflect that slightly.  C’est la vie.  I read 19 books this year.  What a paltry sum.  I continued my life long quest to read all the books that I should have read a long time ago.  8 of my 19 books fell into that category.  Here’s a recap with links to the reviews.
